Basel Loses Creative Midfielder to England

FC Basel has transferred 26-year-old French midfielder Léo Leroy to the English Second Division club Preston North End. Leroy, who joined Basel from Montpellier two years ago, has played 93 games in Switzerland and won the Swiss championship with the Bebbi.

The departure of the midfielder is not a new development, as Leroy had already been considered a candidate for a transfer for some time. Despite his contract running until 2028, the transfer was still completed. Leroy will sign with Preston North End until 2029.

Leroy - A Master of Overtime

Leroy was transferred to Basel from Montpellier two years ago and has since played 93 games in Switzerland. He has scored five goals. Basel fans will particularly remember his 3:2 in extra time in the Cup semi-final of 2025 against Lausanne - just weeks later, FC Basel crowned themselves cup winners. This season, Leroy also helped the Bebbi to the Swiss championship.

The Frenchman has established himself in Basel through his creative playmaking and his goals. His departure to England means not only a loss for FC Basel, but also a financial gain for the club. According to the Basler Zeitung, the release fee is around 2.8 million Swiss francs.

FC Basel has now lost the creative Leroy, but he brings financial gain to the Lichtsteiner team. Basel fans should look for a new creative midfielder to continue the tradition of artistic play that Basel is known for both in Switzerland and internationally.
