FC Basel have started the new week with an important away win and concrete transfer speculation. The Rotblau won 2-1 at FC Zurich on Saturday and, according to the French sports newspaper L'Équipe, have made an offer for midfielder Zoumana Bagbema.
What is the offer for Zoumana Bagbema?
As reported by the Basler Zeitung citing L'Équipe, FC Basel have submitted an official offer to French third-division club Stade Malherbe Caen for the 22-year-old Zoumana Bagbema. The reported transfer fee is 1.5 million euros, with possible bonus payments adding a further 500,000 euros. The defensive midfielder is under contract with Caen until June 2028.
Bagbema was developed at French top club Paris Saint-Germain and moved to Caen in the summer of 2023. Last season, he made 17 competitive appearances in Ligue 3. According to the report, FC Basel are not the only interested party. Belgian top-flight club KAA Gent and Turkish side Göztepe are also said to be interested in signing the Frenchman.
How did FC Basel win in Zurich?
Saturday's match at the Letzigrund developed into a gripping affair. FC Zurich took the lead in the first half through a Philippe Kény penalty. Basel turned the game around in the second half. Kazeem Olaigbe scored the equalizer before Zan Celar secured the winning goal from the penalty spot.
Several yellow cards characterized the heated encounter. For Basel, Becir Omeragic, Ludwig Malachowski, Asane Sow, Moussa Cissé, Zan Celar and Kazeem Olaigbe were cautioned. Coach Stephan Lichtsteiner intervened with substitutions, bringing on Xherdan Shaqiri, Aaron Malouda and Jonas Harder. The victory consolidates their strong position in the table.
Where does FC Basel stand in the Super League?
The three points in Zurich were important for the league standings. FC Basel are in second place in the Super League after five matchdays with ten points. Their record shows three wins, one draw and one defeat. Stephan Lichtsteiner's team has scored ten goals and conceded seven so far, giving them a positive goal difference of plus three.
This puts the Rotblau just one point behind leaders BSC Young Boys. The current form sequence of draw, win, win, loss, win (DWWLW) shows solid capability. Their next challenger is FC Lugano, whom they face at home on September 6th. You can find the complete schedule on our fixtures page.
What does this mean for squad planning?
The interest in Zoumana Bagbema points to a targeted reinforcement in defensive midfield. Following the departure of Léo Leroy to Preston North End, FC Basel appear to be seeking a solution for this position. The potential investment of up to two million euros underscores its priority.
