FC Basel lose another academy talent: winger Agon Rexhaj (19) is joining FC Wil in the Swiss Challenge League. The 19-year-old signs a deal until summer 2029 and stays in eastern Switzerland for three more years.

What happened?

Agon Rexhaj leaves FC Basel after just two Super League appearances. His final Basel game came on 24 May 2026, a 1:3 loss to FC St.Gallen, when he was introduced in the 75th minute. The 19-year-old, who had risen through Basel’s youth ranks since arriving from FC Luzern in 2022, now moves to FC Wil and remains in Switzerland.

The transfer ends a brief but intense chapter in Basel. Rexhaj climbed from the U16 to the U21 before making his senior debut and featured in two pre-season friendlies for the first team.

Why the exit stings for Basel

For FC Basel, losing the young winger is another setback in the current transfer window. Rexhaj had already earned five caps for Switzerland’s U19 side and was seen as one of Basel’s brightest academy prospects. His move underlines once again how tough it is for the club to keep hold of its young stars.

Basel currently top the Super League with 73 points, have scored 91 goals and conceded just 43, and lead second-placed Servette FC by ten points.

What awaits Rexhaj at Wil?

At FC Wil, Rexhaj faces a fresh challenge. The eastern-Swiss side play in the Challenge League and offer the teenager a platform to grow in a professional environment. His contract runs until 2029 - clear long-term security for the young winger.

Under head coach Mario Frick, Rexhaj will hope for a key role. Wil are banking on youth this season and could gain a creative outlet in the attack. Whether he can make the step up remains to be seen.

The transfer’s balance sheet for both clubs

For FC Basel, Rexhaj’s departure is another move in a period of rebuilding. The Rotblau continue to trust their academy, yet the Super League remains unforgiving. With 91 goals scored and only 43 conceded, the first team shows strength, but locking in talent is the next hurdle.

For FC Wil, the signing is a coup. They secure a player with international pedigree and give him room to prove himself in a higher league. The Challenge League remains a springboard - and Rexhaj could be the next success story.
