FC Basel welcome Zan Celar: A returning striker with a sharp eye for goal

FC Basel have completed the signing of Slovenian striker Zan Celar. The 25-year-old returns to Switzerland after spells in England and Germany, where he enjoyed his most successful years. Who is Zan Celar?

Zanar Celar progressed through the youth ranks at NK Maribor before moving abroad to AS Roma at 18. After impressing in the U19 side, he was loaned to AS Cittadella and US Cremonese. In 2021, he joined FC Lugano and enjoyed his best spell in Swiss football. For the Bianconeri, he scored 51 goals in 118 games, finishing fourth, third and second in the league over three seasons. In his final Swiss campaign, he shared the top-scorer award with Chadrac Akolo and Kevin Carlos.

Why has Celar joined FC Basel?

Celar moved to Queens Park Rangers in the EFL Championship in 2024. After a slow start and a thigh injury, he spent last season on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Now he returns to Switzerland.
