FC Basel won 4-2 away at Luzern to claim three vital Super League points, with Xherdan Shaqiri scoring twice and assisting another.
Luzern stunned the visitors when Oscar Kabwit Tshikomb struck after just 60 seconds, but Basel replied four minutes later through Žan Celar, who finished from Kazeem Olaigbe’s assist. Philip Otele made it 2-1 in the 42nd minute after a Shaqiri pass, before the former Stoke and Liverpool star struck twice more, in the 56th and 66th minutes, both times set up by Olaigbe to make it 4-1. Lars Villiger pulled one back for Luzern in the 84th minute, but the visitors held firm.
Luigi Nocentini made two changes after the hour: Aaron Malouda replaced Otele and Clément Michelin came on for Kevin Ruegg at 61 minutes. Giacomo Koloto replaced Shaqiri and Ludwig Thorell took over for Jonas Harder at 72 minutes, before Becir Omeragic replaced Žan Celar in the 85th minute. Luzern boss J. Portmann quadruple-substituted at 60 minutes, bringing on Bongeli Faveurdi Beenga for Tshikomb, Lucas Manuel Silva Ferreira for Zimmermann, Aurelio Oehlers for Owusu and Nando Toggenburger for Mikołajewski, then switched Villiger for Di Giusto at 83 minutes.
Basel edged possession 54% to 46%, taking 17 shots (six on target) to Luzern’s 19 (three on target). The visitors won the corner count 6-3, committed 14 fouls to Luzern’s 13, and picked up two yellow cards (Shaqiri 57’, Ruegg 58’ for dissent) to Luzern’s one (Freimann 52’).
The victory lifts Basel to ten points from seven games, placing them fourth in the Super League, nine behind leaders FC Lugano. This marks the second 4-2 away win over Luzern this month, following the identical result on 13 September.
